Once 70% of all matchboxes were made in Jönköping, Sweden, from local asp wood. Have a look at a matchbox – may be the matches are imported from Sweden?

Originally it was but handcraft, mostly by women and children and anything but healthy. The phosphor damps caused severe illness and killed many people at young age.
To increase production a machine was developed – which made people workless.
At the end: perfect matchboxes…
