Göta Canal has been constructed in the early 19th century forming a waterway from Gothenburg on the west coast to the Baltic Sea by linking a number of lakes and rivers such as Göta älv, Lake Vänern, Lake Vättern… The waterfalls in Trollhättan were an obstacle for ships and transport. So Trollhätte Canal had to be built to bring ships past the fall and further to Lake Vänern.
